A beta version of a program, game, etc., is an unfinished version of an application released to either the public in general or a select few, allowing them to test it for bugs or glitches.

The focus of beta testing is reducing impacts to users. The process of delivering a beta version to the users is called beta release and is typically the first time that the software is available outside of the organization that developed it.
